Cancel a recurring donation

A recurring donation is a Stripe subscription that charges the donor every month (or every set period). Canceling stops future charges but does not refund those already collected.

TL;DR

Open the donor record → tab Recurring donationsCancel. Cancellation is immediate and the donor is notified by email.

Steps

    1. CRM → Members → <donor>.
    2. Tab Recurring donations.
    3. Locate the active subscription you want to cancel.
    4. Click Cancel subscription.
    5. Pick a reason (donor request, admin error, member departure). Used for internal reports.
    6. Confirm.

What happens next

  • Stripe records the cancellation instantly. No new periods will be charged.
  • The donor receives an automatic email notifying the cancellation.
  • In recurring donation reports, the subscription appears as Canceled with date and reason.
  • Previously collected donation history remains intact.

Refunds

If the cancellation includes refunding the last charge (by error or request), use Donations → Movements → <charge> → Refund. The refund is processed in Stripe and deducted from the next payout.

Who can do this

  • The donor can cancel their own subscription from the donor portal.
  • Finance admin and staff with donations:manage permission can cancel any donor’s subscription.
