Member growth

The growth report breaks net membership change into flows: how many joined, how many left, by what cause, and what the difference means.

The equation

Membership today = Membership 12 months ago + Prospect conversions + Transfers in + Reactivations − Voluntary departures − Transfers out − Inactive (12 months no contact) − Deaths

Main view: waterfall

Period start ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 1,247 + Conversions ▓▓▓ +147 + Transfers in ▓ +28 + Reactivations ▓ +14 − Departures ▓ -22 − Transfers out ▓ -19 − Inactive ▓▓ -56 − Deaths ▓ -3 Period end ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 1,336 (+89, +7.1%)

Departure causes

Each departure is classified with a cause (captured when deactivating a member):

  • Moved away (transferable to another church)
  • Switched church (no transfer)
  • Pastoral conflict (needs care team follow-up)
  • Health / death
  • Other
  • Unknown (most common)

If “Unknown” exceeds 30%, the system suggests implementing an exit interview to improve capture.

12-month retention rate

Members active 12 months ago: 1,247 Of those, still active today: 1,061 12m retention: 85.1%

Healthy retention is around 85-92%. Below 80% suggests assimilation issues.

Prospect-to-member funnel

Unique visitors last 90 d 300 ↓ 38% Connect cards completed 114 ↓ 64% 2+ attendance 73 ↓ 51% Conversion to member (90 d) 37 → 12.3% of visitor

Each arrow is clickable and drills into the members at that stage.

Benchmark comparison

If your church opts in to the anonymous benchmark (Settings → Privacy), you’ll see your rate compared with churches of similar size and region (aggregated, anonymized data).

Growth demographics

Are you growing in youth? Families? Seniors? Same data segmented by age and marital status.

Growth by channel

Each member has a source channel (how they arrived):

  • Invitation from a member (who invited is trackable)
  • Public event
  • Online search
  • Social media
  • Walk-in
  • Transfer

This tells you which channels work. If 60% of new members came via member invitation, your personal evangelism program works; if no one comes from socials, re-evaluate that channel.

Inactivity

A member auto-transitions to inactive if they have no check-in, donation, or scheduled event in 12 months. They aren’t deleted; they stay inactive until reactivated or explicitly removed.

Reactivation: if they check in or donate again, they auto-return to active and the event is logged.
